View Full Version : Plans To Make Your Own XM PCR ?

Hello Folks,
The XM Company has discontinued the XMPCR, which is a device that
connects to your computer via a USB connection and through a GUI allows
listening to XM programming. By using the TimeTrax software program you
can time shift and record XM programming.
There has been discussion among electronic minded DIY's on how to make
their own XMPCR using the readily available XMDirect (XMD1000) Universal
Turner Box which retails for 49 bucks at Best But/Circuit City and the
like.
The below Web Link at the I-Hacked.Com Web Site provides detailed
information and photographs on how to make your own XMPCR device using
the XMDirect (XMD1000) Universal Turner Box.

Note: Some Web Browsers might tunicate the above link and you might have
to cut and paste the link into your browser.
This is very simple to do and the total cost is less than 65 bucks. The
last time I looked the XMPCR was going for 250-350 bucks on eBay. I made
my own about 2 months ago and it works flawlessly.

Fred

What is with all the stupid new phrases that we already had words for?
Say RECORDING, not "time shifting"
Say RAP, not "hip hop"
Say DESTROY, not "Liberate"
Say UNCONSTITUTIONAL, not "PATRIOT act"

Note that these cables are selling on E-bay with a $25 buy it now
price, and $15 starting price. If you bid the auction, you might
get it for less than $25.

The XM Fan Store just got some stock in on the XMPCR. Units without
antennas are selling for $79.98, and with antennas for just over $100,
limit one to a customer. I bought one without antenna, and it
arrived this morning. Enterprising people can likely buy one and
sell it on E-bay, doubling your money in one shot. The highest price
I saw in competed auctions was $300, but most were in the $220 range.

@ John,
You are correct that XMFan Store presently has some XMPCR in stock but
there is a limited supply. The XM Company has discontinued the XMPCR and
has no intensions of producing anymore. The only reason these became
available recently is that the XM Company cleaned out the last remaining
items they had in the warehouse. The availability of the XMPCR at a
reasonable price will be short lived.
The reason I made the posting providing detailed plans was for DIY's who
might be interested in making their own cable. Making your own cable is
cheaper than purchasing a ready-made cable. The cheapest I have seen for
a serial based cable is 30 bucks. The USB based cable is 45 bucks. This
isn't rocket science but if you are unaware of the pinout information
and don't have any diagnostics equipment it might be difficult to
decipher the circuitry. Three months ago this information was almost
impossible to obtain but now it has become readily available.
@ Truth,
"Time Shift" is not phraseology that I coined but is a quote from the
fine folks at TimeTrax. I believe TimeTrax chose to use the "Time Shift"
phraseology to evade the XM Company TOS which states that customers are
not suppose to "Record" XM programming. I guess in some lawyers mind
"Time Shift" is different than "Record".

It's easy enough to just record the XM audio signal from any home device on
your computer with any recording software. Since you can determine what's
currently playing via the internet, time-shifting shouldn't be too
difficult. I already have (free) software that passively works with the
XMPCR in this manner; I could probably easily adapt it to get the program
info via the web instead. (I already have a player that synchronizes with
the program log.)

Oh I know exactly that's why they did this, but doesn't mean the rest of us
have to play along. When you see that phrase in a story, just change it to
"record" before forwarding a story to someone.
The reason they want to call criminals ("illegal aliens") "undocumented
workers" now, is so that people forget that they are criminals.
Hmmmm, what can we call "stealing" or "shoplifting"? How about,
"undocumented gifts" so then I can just take whatever I want with a clear
conscience?
Next time I record a phone conversation and someone complains that I
recorded it without their consent, I will say that I didn't record them, I
just "time shifted" their call.

English is a dynamic language? :-)
> Say RECORDING, not "time shifting"
"Time shifting" implies not just the action, but the reason for it. If I
set my VCR up to record "Terminator 2" at 2am on TNT, that implies that I
want to watch it when I'm awake, not when it's being broadcast. If I'm
watching and taping the show at the same time, editing commercials on the
fly, I'm recording it so that I can keep it in the archives to watch again
and again. I'm time shifting "E.R." tonight, for instance, while watching
"Without a Trace". I'll probably watch "E.R." Saturday night, when there's
nothing on network TV worth watching.
> Say RAP, not "hip hop"
Two different things. Hip hop has a little more sophistication than cRAP.
Not much, but a little.
> Say DESTROY, not "Liberate"
I've liberated a lot of things that I haven't destroyed. Or, was this a dig
at the present occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.? Iraq looks like
destruction now, but it may wind up being "reconfigured" before it's done.
:-) Of course, have you ever seen a heart in the middle of a mitral valve
replacement? It looks like it'll never beat again.
> Say UNCONSTITUTIONAL, not "PATRIOT act"
Can't say it yet. Hasn't been tested. Probably won't be any time soon.
I'm still waiting for the Sullivan Act to be tested in New York state. :-)

Ok, so never again can I be accused of recording someone illegally without their
consent, I will just be "time shifting" them so that I can hear what they said
at a later time.
TWO can play at this game of legal deception to try and avoid legal issues.

Where in the world did you ever get that from? I am not saying you are wrong,
but would love to know where you actually researched or got this from.
Certainly not from a dictionary?

Here, we are using Bush's trick of giving names to things that are exactly the
opposite of what they really are, like "Operation Iraqi Freedom" which in
reality has turned them into slaves, or put them to de@th.

It is in direct contradiction and violation of the constitution. If the
writers of the constitution were alive today, they would be telling you exactly
that. Nothing needs to be tested, one only needs to know how to read and
comprehend.

Waiting for the government to make a decision on the actions of the government
is silly. Regardless of their decision, the facts still remain the facts.

I'm sure they are concerned about piracy. You can record for your own
use, but don't try to sell XM's content. For example, There are lots
of people on EBay selling copies of Opie and Anthony shows. I'm sure
that hurts the bottom line, so that's why they're concerned

It also keeps people from paying the extra fee to listen to O&A. Those CD's
are just as illegal as selling burnt CD's of the Eagles Greatest Hits or DVD
copies of movies in Blockbuster, and eBay should be pulling them off. There
are sites around that are letting you download the O&A show for free, and I
think you can find it on P2P networks, and this may or may not be legal
depending on where you reside :-)
