Anyone know if High Def Radio is acutally broadcasting
anywhere other than Cedar Rapids, Iowa? Is this something
that will be a reality, or will it die on the vine?

As crazy as it sounds, it is radio that sounds worse than the analog radio we
now have.
High Definition = Low quality.
Patriot Act = Unpatriotic destruction of the constitution.
Liberating Iraq = Destroying Iraq.
Freedom = Slavery.
Best Health Care system in the world = No health care system at all.
Everything now is exactly the opposite of what you are led to believe it is.
Go to www.ibiquity.com/hdradio/hdradio_hdstations.htm and you can
check state by state what stations are on the air with HD Radio. There
are only a few. However I think the list has not been updated in awhile.
Whether it will die on the vine or not is yet to be seen. However, for
better or worse, several of the big radio station operators are saying
they will be changing over most of their stations in 3-4 years.

An FM broadcast system where a station sends out a digital stream,
but it can contain more than one program channel. The content has
better specs than analog FM, and it can be done in a multi-channel
format. Some of the content will be pay content, others, like
public radio, will be free or membership only.
Ultimate Electronics had a flyer that contained HD radios, but
they were available only at their store in Cedar Rapids, which
actually has at least one HD station.

OK, I went and googled it. So it's the land broadcasters' answer to
satellite radio -- close, but no cigar. The reason that I abandoned FM
broadcast is NOT its audio quality, but its programming, or lack therof.
Commercial (i.e. relying on advertising) radio sucks. Public (i.e. taxpayer
supported) radio sucks even more. XM and Sirius give you over a hundred
channels with many formats. Where outside NY, LA, or Chicago is there a
market that can support this kind of diversity?
I listen to:
Jazz
Old school R&B classic funk
dance
70's rock
Gospel
Big Band
at random times.

Exactly! Who wants to hear 20 minutes of commercials an hour in crystal
clear digital audio? It's going to take much more than that to keep
listeners off of satellite radio. IBOC on AM is like committing suicide.
The co-channel interference ruins the reception of anything else close by on
frequency. You can say goodbye to the old days of AM DXing. HDTV already
has ruined TV DXing for many.

Neat concept, but I wonder if the bandwidth will be any wider than the
current (what is it, 30-15,000Hz?), or will it be the same ol' stuff crammed
into a digital signal along with textual data? I'm thinking probably the
latter, since it's supposedly compatible with analog receivers, according to
the little "How It Works" blurb.

Hey, you forgot:
No Child Left Behind
The Environmental President
The Great Unifier
and, best of all,
Compassionate Conservative
....then there's
"But I never inhaled"
and
"It depends on what the definition of "is" is".
