There are a number of things I'd like to see on satellite radio.
First, I'd like some real radio stations. It would be nice to
get a sampling of live radio from perhaps the top 6 cities in
the US. It would be nice to hear news and local culture from
these different areas of the country when something is going on
in that area. WJFK from Washington DC would be nice for us
political junkies, as would WBBM Chicago for news junkies.
I'd like another rock channel like Top Tracks, but for a little
more mellow music. Something where I will hear stuff like
Eric Clapton, Elton John, Eagles, CSN, Neil Young, and other
less hard rock, but still be hits.
I'd like a few talk radio shows that are not political in nature.
There are a few already, like Bruce Williams, Dean Edell, and
Dave Ramsey. I'd like a few more choices, like maybe Dr Laura,
Dr Joy Brown, Clark Howard, etc.
I'd like Coast to Coast AM to be re-run in the daytime like it
was in the early days of XM.
I'd also like something a little more towards the edge like
Pacifica Radio.
I'd like a CBC channel (Canadian Broadcast).
Finally, TIVO features so I can time-shift the programs that I miss.

Checked out FM lately? This is why bought a satellite unit! <G>

I'd like to see Clark & Dr. Brown on XM.

Minneapolis is a radio wasteland. As far as mainstream rock goes,
there a powerhouse classic rock station, but it plays a pretty hard
brand of classic rock. There are 4 or 5 alternative rock stations,
all of which are way too far off the deep end for me. On good days,
we can pull an oldies station from Wisconsin. There is an easy
listening rock station, a hip-hop station, and then FM104, which
changes format every few weeks (lately, it is a half-way decent
80's station).
What I am looking for is something a little middle of the road,
not so hard, but not easy listening. Something I can play as
background music where people will know the songs, but it will
not interrupt conversation.
For public radio, this is the place to be. But for music, it is
like living in a desert.

Here is the problem with that. They would all be the exact same thing,
only with different call letters!
We DO have exactly what you want. The top stations across the country
are KISS-FM, they all sound the same and only have different call
letters. The KISS-XM channel has answered your wishes.

Tune in AM radio.

The right and left propaganda channels on XM and Sirrius already have
the same political bullshit talk that any other political station around
the country is yapping about.

CNN is much better. WBBM is nothing but commercials, traffic,
weather, headline, rinse and repeat.

You've got it. It is called the 70s channel.

NOW you are talking! Everyone wants that!

RIGHT! Most people are sleeping when it is on, why not rerun it
during the day when people can actually listen to it.

I just tune in the AM if I want that.

I just got a cheap Pentium computer for $5 or $10 at a library sale or
flea market, then load a program that records the input of the sound
card to MP3 to what ever time you set it for. A VCR for radio.

That's why most of us bought satellite radio, to get AWAY from FM radio
and get something different.

That was my point. <G>
That's ALL that's on the FM band here in the Northeast, "Adult
Contemporary".
Your area sounds like it actually has FM radio I'd like!

OK smart guy, where to I set my AM radio to get KGO when I am in
Dubuque, Iowa? Or how do I get WGN Chicago when I am driving I-10
in the panhandle of Florida?

Yeah, but WJFK has the people on who are acutally making the news.
Where else can you hear G-Gordon debating the other Watergate
characters on the yearly anniversary of the break-in? It is nice
to get the news as-it-happens from the place where it is actually
happening.

But that is what I want...I'd like to hear something relevant to
the midwest when I am driving through the midwest. Dittos for LA
and the Northeast Corridor.

So, how many of the Eric Clapton songs from the 1990's do they
play on the 70's channel? I am looking for a style of music,
not period of time in history. Some folks like that, I do not.

I know several people that listen to WGN in Florida.

Other stations pick up G-Gordon. I have heard him when tuning across the
dial, and it wasn't on WJFK, it was some local station in another state.

Actually, when a big local incident happens, I tune to CNN rather than the
local news, as CNN does a better job and has better visuals.

Ok, but WBBM is not going to give you that, unless a commercial for a local
restaurant is what you are wanting to hear.
I make a point to tune in the stations in the middle of nowhere, only because
their music programming was so much better than the big downtown stations, not
for any local flavor or news or anything.

Those would be on the 90's channel.

I'd like to hear a fun classics stream in the classical catagory. The
current ones never do things like the King's Singers do the Beatles, or
Bach organ blasters, or arrangements of classics for brass. They avoid
composers like Joseph Lanner. XM Classics, VOX! and Pops are
"relatively" serious. It would be good to have some occasional relief.

You can have the VOX channel and do that. I can't stand opera.

I would like some "soundscapes"... long mixes of music and soft sound
effects mixed together to make a restful sound environment.
In that same vane I would like mixes of live sounds from the studios that
are in the Sirius building, sounds from the street in front of the Sirius
building, mixed with sound effects, mixed with music.

Pacifica is far removed from Air America. Founded in 1949 by Lou Hill,
a pacifist and conscientous objector. Flagship stations on the FM dial
are WBAI (New York) and KPFA <Berkley CA). Pacifica is listener
sponsored. Unlike, Air America, Pacifica doesn't shill for the sponosrs
that it rails against. http://www.wbai.org/ and http://www.kpfa.org/

Each genre block should have a channel that's DJ-Free!
Satellite radio's ads all say "no commercials" (which isn't true, 'cause
I hear almost as many spots where Sirius preaches to the choir promoting
themselves as I do ads on FM), but they say nothing about the fact they've
got DJs who talk over songs, break up music by telling you the same song
your reciever's already told you and drone on, etc.- just like FM does.

All music channels should not have ANY spoken voice on them at all! No DJ,
no commercials, no promos, the only human voices heard should be those that
are singing on the songs. If they are not part of the songs, then they
should not be on the music channels.
> Satellite radio's ads all say "no commercials" (which isn't true, 'cause

Same with XM, WAY TOO MUCH TALK on the music channels!! Just because the
commercial is about XM or Siriuis, does not mean it is not a commercial! It
IS a commercial!
> , but they say nothing about the fact they've
> got DJs who talk over songs, break up music by telling you the same song

Yes, isn't that the most ridiculous thing ever? On FM radio, no DJ ever
tells you the name of the songs they play, so you never knew what to look for
in the stores, but once we have the technology to display the song and artist
on the radio, THEN they feel the need to talk and tell you what you already
know.
Only in HUMAN society do we run into such asinine behavior.
