Here is the latest reply from Comcast about their newsgroup server....
Comcast does not take requests for newsgroups ever. So we cannot add
anything that anyone requests.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions.
Sincerely,
Comcast Online Customer Support

Keep in mind, I can not read any posts from alt.radio.satellite, only
from alt.radio.satellite.gz so make sure replies go to the .gz
group. That is the way Comcast has it set up.
That's the problem I'm having with Mediacom. Mediacom does not have it's
own news server so they don't take requests and can't tell me who to
contact.

I thought that netnews.mchsi.com was Mediacom's news server. I found this
on another newsgroup. Maybe it will work for this group, too:

From what I've read, Comcast is shutting down their netnews.comcast.com news
server as this is a relic of the old AT&T broadband service. Comcast has
already signed an agreement with Giganews for them to provide all of their
customers with usenet with a 1GB transfer cap. You must use that link I
posted before to get a Giganews Comcast username and password. Then you
will be able to log on and reconfigure your Outlook Express to access
ews.comcast.giganews.com
Yeah, "netnews.mchsi.com" is what we put in our news reader program to
connect but Mediacom does not operate the server. The server is the one
that was used by AT&T@home, ATTBI ( AT&T Broadband), Mediacom@home , and now
Mediacom High Speed Internet (mchsi). I also believe it's the one Comcast
uses now. But it seems no ISP claims responsibility to operating the news
server.

Comcast is supposed to be using Giganews, but they still keep the old attbi
one active. Netnews.attbi.com was renamed netnews.comcast.com. Comcast's
IP is 63.240.76.16 and Mediacom's (or whatever that mchsi.com one is) is
216.148.227.77 so they must be different. Actually, I take that back. I
did a tracert on the IP's and they're both going to very similar IP's at
attbi.com. Anyways, supposedly Comcast is shutting netnews.comcast.com down
after this Dec. 31st forcing everyone to be moved over to Giganews who
hasn't been moved already. If Mediacom is using the same server, are they
getting rid of all usenet access or will they allow their customers free
Giganews access, too? Was the email address I listed before the one you
tried? It seems like the newsgroup I got that from had luck talking to
someone who actually had something to do with the news server.
Mark,
I never tried the email address you gave but called tech support a couple of
times with no results. There have been rumors about Mediacom dropping
newsgroup access for over a year on the Broadband Reports Mediacom forum but
nothing definite has ever come direct from Mediacom.
It's not too big a deal for me as I already have an account with Giganews,
but it would be nice to have my ISP account to have this group as well. The
sad part is that they took the time to add this group with the "gz" at the
end but now we can't get them to add the correct group.

Comcast customers have to sign up at
https://secure.giganews.com/cc/signup.html before they can use the Giganews
server.

Were you reading his post from alt.radio.satellite or
alt.radio.satellite.gz? Are you using netnews.comcast.net?

Well, I don't use giganews, I use Comcast's news server. It works just
fine, and unlike giganews, I do not have a LIMIT on how much I can use it, I
can use it as much as I want and download as much as I want. I read the
terms of giganews, and I don't like them.
Apparently many feel the same way, or they wouldn't still have their own
server up and running.
They were able to add alt.radio.satellite.gz just fine, even though that is
not what anyone requested.
So, until they add alt.radio.satellite, I will have to use this one
instead. Doesn't seem to be a problem so far. I read others with other
servers that had the same thing happen. So for all of us with this group,
we just need to cross post to both until the other group appears.
Anyone that wants to send a message so that everyone here can see and read
it, will just have to remember to post to both groups, else many of us will
not see your messages.
Seems to be the only way to fix the problem in the meantime as Comcast, and
other companies like mentioned by others here, do not know how to add the
group.

Either because you are reading it from alt.radio.satellite.gz, like I am
reading your post from, or you are using giganews, not Comcast's news
server.
Comcast is not telling new customers about the Comcast news server, they
tell new customers they have to use giganews and don't tell them about
Comcast's own server that is free and no limit on downloads, like giganews
has.

Ah-I see-I didn't know about the legacy comcast news server as I was
provisioned for giganews when I (finally) got cable earlier this year.

Your Comcast account automatically qualifies you for a free giganews account
that you can access from your newsreader (just like I'm doing now) with a 2
gig transfer limit.

He doesn't want to use the giganews account because they have a transfer cap
where the Comcast one is unlimited. The current rumour is that the Comcast
news server is slated to shut down at the end of day Dec. 31st. and that's
why they aren't supporting the old legacy server anymore or telling any new
customers about it.

Even so, it is easy enough to supplant what isn't available on comcast
servers that have no limit with giganews and have multiple accounts listed
in your reader.
I couldn't imagine going through 2 GB of messages a month (unless one is
using binary groups). Wouldn't leave much time for life....
