View Full Version : SIRIUS 3 day trial online to listen (codes?)
Stacey

I am considering activating a Sirius radio I am
getting for free from my parents
who never did activate or use the unit.
I wanted to sign up for the free 3 day listening
thing online, but during that sign
up process it asks for a PROMO CODE if I have one.
My question is, are there promo codes that extend
the free listening period or something?
If so what code would I use,,,
Thanks

This is something new AFAIK. I don't know of any promo codes for this
at the moment. There was once a link on howardstern.com that allowed
you to listen for a week for free instead of 3 days but this is now
gone. You can sign up for the 3 day service, use stacey1@dodgeit.com as
the email, go to www.dodgeit.com to check the email box. When the 3
days is up, use stacey2@dodgeit.com, then stacey3, stacey4, etc. or
whatever you want. Dodgeit is a great service for whenever you need an
email address for something. You can check it without signing up for
anything.

Thanks for the tip, signed up but its sad cuz all
the news sports and entertainment links just bring
up a 40 second promo clip,
I was expecting to be able to really hear and
listen to these channels, kinda a lame
preview,,,altho I can preview the music
channels for now... I would mostly be using this
radio for sports news and enetertainment
purposes...

Sorry about that. Even with the subscription you cannot listen to these
streams online. Sirius' deal with the 3rd party
news/sports/entertainment programming providers prohibits them from
streaming this content online. Only the news/sports/entertainment
streams which are produced in house are available online (i.e. - OutQ)

Either its my comcast hi speed cable connection
(which to me seems stable for listening to other
streaming music stations online) or some sirius
server issue - but trying to listen to
the music channels preview wise online is
terrible, cuts out every 10 seconds or so...
Very dissapointing trial, I know you can use the
service online once you subscribe, but
is it just as bad as this trial (channels that are
just 40 second promos - are they gonna work now)
and these that cut out left and right, is that
common for PAID subscribers too (in other words
is this online interface I am using for the free
trial the same as what i would use if I had a paid
subscription and could listen online?)

I have Rogers Yahoo cable internet here (high speed) accessed via a
wireless router and it works just fine for me. I went to the online
streaming just to see if they were having a temporary problem but I'm
listening to Elvis Radio on the streaming right now and it's not
dropping out. The online streaming is 32kbps and should be just fine on
anything better than 56k dialup. Do you have the latest version of
windows media player installed? I'm using Firefox as a browser,
although it works equally well in IE, and I've used the streaming with
WMP9 and 10.
The interface is the same for both preview and subscribers. Mine
doesn't cut out; there must be something else going on on your end. The
sports news and entertainment channels (minus OutQ) are not available
online for subscribers either due to the contracts with the content
providers.

Could just be my connection today is flakey,
(super super ice cold here in Michigan today), or
could be my browser (have firefox will try),also
will try my laptop with xp
vs this main box that has 2000 on it, who knows
maybe a few changes will help...
but on both machines they are updated fully in
terms of media player,
hopefully I can get that resolved just to be able
to give the radio stations
a trial listening to...
either way my radio and home.car docs are free so
I will do the month to month
minimum and check it all out...
thanks for answering all my newbie questions...

firefox fixed it, not a single drop out, no other
changes vs using firefox vs IE6 ,yet another
reason
I should just switch over 100% to firefox :)

I also use Firefox and via 3mbps ISP and my Dlink 54g wireless home
network connection to my win2k laptop and never have any issues, so it
sounds as if you may have an ISP issue.
I had sent them an email about one week ago asking if they could at
least add the comedy channels to the PC stream. Has anyone else asked
this and received a reply?

I did notice the sound feed on this trial of music
is only 34k,
does the sound quality thru the radio itself (thru
car or home dock)
sound better than this online feed?
Hoping so, my pc speakers are nice too, klipsch
with subwoofer, yet the feed
is sorta flat and compressed sounding, hopefully
the service thru the unit sounds
a bit better???

Glad you got the online streaming working w/Firefox :)
The sound quality using a real Sirius radio is much MUCH better than what
the online streaming offers. The actual bandwidth isn't much greater,
approximately 40kbps, however the codec Sirius uses is way more advanced
than what's used in online streaming, and is constantly varied depending on
the bandwidth needs at the time. It's like VBR, but when VBR reduces the
bitrate on one channel when it doesn't need it, other channels that do need
it benefit. This allows for more beneficial use of the bandwidth that's
available. I'd compare the sound quality approximately to that of a 96kbps
MP3. That's just IMHO, though so take it FWIW :)

I wouldn't quite agree. On the one hand, some of the channels (the classical and
jazz, from what I've noticed) sound VERY good, certainly better than the 34kbps
streams. But the NPR, PRI, some of the pop channels and the talk, sports and comedy
channels are really not all that good, to be perfectly honest. Truth be told, those
sources sound better on their own web streams (since Sirius does not, as someone else
pointed out, provide any more than a 40 second clip for the third-party
programming...even for subscribers). I wish that weren't the case, but the answer
should be more equivocal than your assessment.

Sorry, I meant to say that the music channels IMO sound like 96kbps mp3's.
The talk/sports/entertainment channels sound like AM or highly compressed.
I should have mentioned that given that Stacey had mentioned an interest in
those channels.

They need to do something about that if they want to gain subs.

They do provide real live sports broadcasts with their satellite radios,
just not online. Just purchase a home kit or get that promo that's going on
right now for the free radio as it comes with both car and home docks. As
long as you can get the antenna near a window, you should be alright. It
depends where in the country you live.

The talk channels sound far worse than AM. They have a pronounced
'buzz', somewhat like a slightly blown speaker. It's really noticeable
when listening using decent headphones or earbuds. If it sounded as
good as a cheap $10 AM radio I'd be much happier.
