Mark,
I noticed something interesting tonight with my ISP's news server. I don't
use it much because the retention is very short. That's why I mainly use
Giganews. Anyway, Outlook Express alerted me that new groups were available
and I looked to see what had been added.
They added alt.radio.satellite.gz
One of your posts to XMFan said to reference
ftp://ftp.isc.org/usenet/control/alt/alt.radio.satellite.gz
I don't know what the "gz" at the end is, but did my ISP screw up and add
that to newsgroup name??

@ Mark S.,
I requested that my ISP add the Usenet alt.radio.satellite.
Tonight I checked my ISP newsgroup news server and a new newsgroup was
added. The alt.radio.satellite.gz was added.
Could you explain what’s happing here? Has my ISP made an error and
added the wrong newsgroup or has some news server someplace along the
line made some type of error and added the wrong newsgroup.
I have also noticed that Bruce is also reporting that his ISP has also
added the alt.radio.satellite.gz newsgroup.
What action do I need to take on my part to get the alt.radio.satellite
newsgroup?
Regards,
Fred.

The reference I made to
ftp://ftp.isc.org/usenet/control/alt/alt.radio.satellite.gz is a file. The
"gz" stands for GZip, as the file is compressed. Inside this file is the
control message (and now a booster) which created the group. I guess I was
giving newsadmins too much credit in thinking that they would understand
that and they could use it to help them. They are probably so used to
people just emailing, "gimmie alt.wesley.crusher.die.die.die!!! NOW!!1!"
they they just quickly glanced over the email and added the wrong group. I
think I will stop telling people to use that as a reference. It never did
occur to me that they could possibly take that as being the group name. I
guess the next course of action would be to reply back to them and tell them
they added the wrong group, and could they please add the correct one.

First post in here for me:
I've just requested my ISP, prodigy/yahoo, to add this group.
I first d/loaded it on a freebie newsserver, freenet, but that is
read only.

Excellent! Glad to have you here, Ian, and thanks for requesting your news
server to add the group. You'll have done a favour for someone else on your
ISP who may enjoy this group.

The more the merrier, to coin a cliche....
I was actually looking for a n/group on this topic about
12/18 months ago, when i was thinking of subscribing to
either XM or Sirius.
I settled on XM, and generally very pleased so far.
I did find a mailing list for XM radio listeners who
were deficient of eyesight, which I qualified for now, but
it was almost entirely devoted to some software that
you run to put the satellite signal through your PC,
as I understood it, and I just use the standard
domestic setup, only through a good radio with great
speakers.
I was looking more for discussion of the contents and
criticism and so on, of XM.
So maybe this is the right place? Is there a FAQ yet, or a copy of
the charter?
(I like to know the rules so I can break 'em, see!)

It seems your story is quite common. I was very suprised to find out there
wasn't a group already but now there is so it's all good. The idea of
alt.radio.satellite is to talk about anything satellite radio related, not
just software, but everything. If you want to talk about it, start a thread
and you'll likely get folks to chime in. Of course we're still brand new,
just over a week old now so we're still growing. Also, while XM and Sirius
are on topic, so are other types of satellite radio, such as those used
elsewhere like WorldSpace and MBCo, and satellite radio that requires the
use of a satellite dish. There is a charter, you can view it in the
newgroup archives at ISC.org, here's the link:
ftp://ftp.isc.org/usenet/control/alt/alt.radio.satellite.gz I'll be working
on an FAQ sometime in the future. I did post a general rundown that I just
quickly wrote in the thread "Welcome to alt.radio.satellte!" but if your
news server just added this group you may not see it.
In other news, I just got word back from Google Groups, and they say they
will be adding this group soon! This is excellent news and will help us a
lot.

@ sum1else,
Glad you found our new newsgroup.
You mentioned a mailing list that focused on software that you run to
put the satellite signal through your PC. I believe you are referring to
the XMPCR. Perchance could you provide some information on this mailing
list.

Fred

Thisis from memory, as I don't seem to have kept any records of it in
my files:
xmradiofortheblind@yahoogroups.com
or
xmradiofortheblind.yahoogroups.com
I subscribed by email, with something like
subscribe@xmradiofortheblind@yahoogroups.com
with subscribe in the Subject line
and I believe you can go to the yahoogroups web site or whatever and
do some clicking on their yahoogroups page.
Best I can do!
(I unsubscribed several months ago, so it's all faded)

Errrr ... backing away nervously. Never been called Bubble Boy
before, at least not in my hearing!
Gimme a clue: were you in the xmradio... yahoo mailing list? Or
some n/group I posted in, maybe?
'Fraid your name doesn't ring any bells, but that's not unusual for
me (it's the drink, see) destroys the brain cells they tell me.

Yep, as I said elsewhere, I have afew beefs and grumbles about XM
and was looking for a forum to vent me spleen.
And maybe some complimentary remarks as well.

Quite respectable compared to some new groups I've seen in the alt.*
hierarchy.

Retrieved the article OK, using a GET function in my somewhat peculiar news setup;
it was unavailable on prodigy/yahoo servers, and on library.airnews., but
the freebie server had it as they 've carried the n/group from it's
start, probably.
I too don't much want a n/group only for discussion of XM Radio, too
narrow, too restricted.

Great! And add another to your collection, airnews, an American
nationwide ISP - see the header
of my first message in this thread.
I'm about to look up the email address of the free German server,
individual.*.de, and put in a request as they are very popular for
text only n/groups so
that may pull in a few more victims ... err, contributors I mean.
